Discover the Benefits of Restoring the Acoustic Parts of Your Instrument

The acoustic part of a grand or upright piano is its heart. Its condition determines the power, quality, and clarity of the sound produced when playing. That is why it is extremely important to keep every acoustic element of the piano in perfect condition, so that all sound qualities are preserved.

When considering restoration of the acoustic section, the following elements should be taken into account:

Soundboard – A damaged soundboard results in flat and muffled tones that become weaker with every visible crack. A properly restored soundboard regains its flexibility and crown, essential for producing a beautiful and powerful sound. Since the soundboard is a very visible part of the piano, a newly hand-applied manufacturer’s logo and a finish with high-quality Italian lacquer will bring freshness and elegance to the instrument. In severe cases, when the soundboard is too damaged for effective repair, replacement is recommended.

New bridge caps (treble and bass) – Cracks in the wood and loose bridge pins reduce the stability of the strings. This can cause buzzing and unstable tones. Replacing bridge caps restores the correct string height and stability, ensuring clear sound, eliminating unwanted noise, and making tuning easier.

Pinblock – Over many years of tuning, the pinblock wood wears out. The holes for the tuning pins widen, reducing tuning stability until the piano eventually becomes untunable, even with oversized tuning pins. Cracks around the pin holes also make the pinblock unusable. A new pinblock ensures excellent tuning stability and extends the piano’s life by decades.

Bass and steel strings – Strings are the source of the sound, and their quality depends on their condition. Age and improper storage conditions (too cold, hot, humid, or dry) can cause strings to rust and break. New strings from leading German manufacturers restore the instrument’s pure and powerful tone.

Cast-iron frame – The frame forms the skeleton of the piano, bearing the enormous tension of the strings. It is also an important visual element that enhances the beauty of the instrument. A carefully sanded and refinished frame, coated with high-quality primer and final lacquer, improves both durability and appearance.

Hitch pins – These secure the strings to the frame and can bend or weaken over time. Replacing hitch pins during the refinishing process ensures the safety of the new stringing.

Agraffes – Agraffes keep the strings aligned so that the hammer strikes all strings in the choir evenly. If not too worn, they can be restored, but often they require complete replacement.

Frame screws – Corroded or damaged screws should be nickel-plated or replaced, depending on their condition.
