Steinway L piano restoration - Tim Williams from USA
I recently sent a 1977 Steinway model L grand piano to SAP Renovation in Poland for major rebuilding work.
The piano was thoroughly worn out, but was fundamentally sound. It needed complete restoration of all the case work as well as the fundamentals of new strings, pin block, and action parts.
I was extremely pleased with the work and found the entire transaction to be a very positive one
After SAP received my piano, they made a thorough assessment of its needs. They pointed out things that were still good and suggested some changes that I had not thought about. At no time did I feel any pressure to have unnecessary work done or to select expensive unplanned options. SAP asked a very specific set of questions and helped me to select materials and finishes that expertly satisfied my tastes.
During the renovation they twice sent me photos to make sure they were doing exactly what I wanted. They were prepared to change things if necessary, but in both instances I found their work to be more than satisfactory. New York Steinways from that era tend to have cast iron plates with wavy surfaces and blemishes.
SAP restored every surface of the plate and removed the blemishes. The black highlights on the raised lettering were done by a true artist
Complemented by a high gloss polyester finish, the piano looks better to me than any factory finish I have seen from the New York Steinway factory
Musically the piano has a magnificent sound. Part of that is certainly due to the fact that it was originally one of those better sounding Steinways.
However, the Renner action parts, Abel hammers, and Heller strings installed by SAP seem in every way to equal or exceed Steinway factory parts
I have owned three Steinways and have played many others, but I am not exaggerating to say this is among the best, if not THE best.
Dealing with international shipping, export documents, and customs is not easy for those of us who do not do it on a regular basis. But SAP did a good job of helping me clear those hurdles. When my piano mover received the shipment, he said it was the strongest job of piano crating he had ever seen. It’s easy to say, “You get what you pay for.” But we all know that’s not entirely true. We often get less than we pay for. SAP’s prices are quite competitive, the work is excellent, and with a turnaround time of less than eight months for this complete rebuild, I would say that SAP Renovation is qualified competition for any piano rebuilder anywhere. More than anything else, I found them to be a company you can trust
